Tales of bravado in war, a recount from an old timer, a kid telling his buddy how his dad and him caught the biggest trout of the season during the summer break.
As long as it entrails and amuses the listener, providing the listener with entertainment, i would consider it a story. Stories can capture the imagination, instill fear, raise the moral or demean the weary.
Stories can even be a weapon, tales in war passed down by mouth can shake the very defenses of the strongest battalions, or bolster the beaten to rise up against their foes time and again in defense of that which is theirs.
Stories therefore, are an open canvas with a multitude of uses limited only by the mind.
